IEEE Educational Activities Board is responsible for coordinating the educational activities of the IEEE. The volunteer and staff members carry out this responsibility by developing educational programs to ensure l the technological literacy of pre-college students, l the continuous maintenance and improvement of engineering education programs through active participation in accreditation activities, and the development of continuing education products and services that serve the professional development and lifelong learning needs of electro-technology professionals worldwide.

Programs shall include l the broad planning of educational activities of the IEEE, l the development and delivery of continuing education products and activities, l the development of guidelines for the IEEE representatives to accreditation bodies, l the monitoring of accreditation activities, l the coordination of pre-college programs, and l the representation of the IEEE in matters regarding engineering education

Continuing Education l Popular Talk provides information about various aspects of electrical, electronics, and computer engineering l Tutorial introduces engineers to new technical areas and applications l Short Course covers technical and non-technical materials in depth, as in a regular college course l Workshop involves intensive interaction among students and instructors l Self-Study employs stand-alone tools in a variety of media, such as books, videos, CD-ROMs, web-based audio and/or video presentations, etc.

Distinguished Lecturer Program l assists Sections and Chapters in planning high quality programs for their membership. l operate according to procedures defined by the sponsoring Society or Council l Some Societies provide full or partial financial support for speaker travel expenses l In some cases this support is limited only to the Chapters of the sponsoring Society, in other cases there are no restrictions

CEU Program l IEEE is an Authorized Provider of CEUs through the International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET), and has adopted IACET guidelines and criteria for all its continuing professional development programs

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) Purpose l Measure quality of non-credit continuing education l Assure value through application review by IEEE EAB l Meet licensing board and employer CE requirements

Value of CEUs l Increase attendance due to added quality and perceived value l Help engineers maintain their Professional Engineer (PE) license l Generate revenue for Sections, Societies, Chapters, or Regions l Document continuing education requirements of industry

CEUs and PDHs What do they measure? l CEU - One CEU equals ten contact hours of instruction in a continuing education activity l PDH (Professional Development Hour) - One contact hour of instruction or presentation

IEEE CEU Program B ackground l First offered in 1995 l More than 980 courses have offered CEUs l More than 15,000 participants have received CEUs l Over 30 Sections and Societies currently participate in the IEEE CEU Program

To Offer IEEE CEUs l Complete application and submit with back–up course materials l Comply with IACET guidelines l Provide names and contact information of participants for IEEE EAB records

Accreditation Activities l IEEE Educational Activities is responsible for carrying out the accreditation process with the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET) for engineering and engineering technology programs l EAB also participates in international accreditation activities
