The Mythology and Folklore of Halloween

Samhain Halloween is rooted in the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain (pronounced sow- in). Samhain marks the end of the summer and the beginning of the winter season. The holiday was celebrated with religious rituals, bonfires, and dressing in masks This was a very important point in the year ,and it was believed that it was a time when the boundaries of the land of the living and the dead were blurred.

Other Similar Holidays All Saints Day, All Hallows Eve, and All Saints Day (Various European festival celebrating saints and the departed) Día de los Muertos (The Mexican “Day of the Dead”) Araw ng mga Patay (The Philippine “Day of the Dead” The Bon Festival (Buddhist celebration for ancestral spirits) Gai Jatra "Cow Pilgrimage“ (A Nepali holiday for family members lost during the year)

The Jack O’ Lantern Carving root vegatables (such as turnips) is a tradition that originates in the British Isles and was brought to America by imigrants. The Term Jack O’ Lanterns was originally a reference to mysterious lights which are seen over peat bogs. There is a legend of a man named Stingy Jack who is the namesake of the Jack O’ Lantern

The Legend of Stingy Jack Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years. Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O'Lantern."

Trick or Treating Many similar holidays (including Dias De las Muertos and The Bon Festival) involve dressing in costume, usually to scare away or confuse the dead. The concept of going door to door begging for treats is also common. (Christmas Wassaling and Dias De las Muertos’s Calaverita “Little Skulls” for instance). The tradition of trick or treating on Halloween comes from the tradition in England and Ireland of “souling”, where children would go door to door and sing or say a prayer in exchange for cakes on All Saints Day. In Scotland, the tradition of Guising, going door to door for food and coins also predates Halloween.
