LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ Project Objectives Consolidate practices and valuable knowledge base (UK experience) in a form (service) running on an autonomous basis Build features to support innovative policy approaches, facilitating the IS implementation as an environmental policy at a local-regional-national level Formulate a knowledge-based approach with a potential to report measurable social, environmental and economic benefits Consolidate practices and valuable knowledge base (UK experience) in a form (service) running on an autonomous basis Build features to support innovative policy approaches, facilitating the IS implementation as an environmental policy at a local-regional-national level Formulate a knowledge-based approach with a potential to report measurable social, environmental and economic benefits 9

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ Further Project Objectives Prepare and train industries to embark on IS and utilize the service Deploy the widest possible application of scientifically verified technologies for IS upgrade Provide means to disseminate IS in the region of Viotia, but also in other regions in Greece and Europe Improve and increase the participation of Small and Medium business enterprises (SMEs) into IS market– oriented activities Reduce the natural resources consumption (raw material, energy, utilities) Establish Industrial Symbiosis networks, recruit champions to disseminate IS in Greece, Balkans and all regions deprived of government support for IS Prepare and train industries to embark on IS and utilize the service Deploy the widest possible application of scientifically verified technologies for IS upgrade Provide means to disseminate IS in the region of Viotia, but also in other regions in Greece and Europe Improve and increase the participation of Small and Medium business enterprises (SMEs) into IS market– oriented activities Reduce the natural resources consumption (raw material, energy, utilities) Establish Industrial Symbiosis networks, recruit champions to disseminate IS in Greece, Balkans and all regions deprived of government support for IS 10

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ The project hopes to : generate a critical mass of champions to support the new paradigm and its extended use. engage with research and development groups with capabilities to advance the platform’s innovative features. Expected results:  An automated web platform to enable effective matching of companies in IS;  New champions for the IS paradigm, through an IS forum;  Reduced consumption of natural resources in Viotia;  Reduced volume of waste streams disposed to landfill in Viotia.  Dissemination in IS for Industry; Benefits & Expected Results 11

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ Project Actions 12

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ IS vs. eSymbiosis Current IS Practice Manual Cost Intensive Expertise Required Only exact matches discovered Static Process Current IS Practice Manual Cost Intensive Expertise Required Only exact matches discovered Static Process eSymbiosis Practice Automated Cost Effective User Friendly Process Partial Matches discovered Dynamic Process eSymbiosis Practice Automated Cost Effective User Friendly Process Partial Matches discovered Dynamic Process 13

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ Implementing the e-Symbiosis Technology Advantage eSymbiosis employs Artificial Intelligence Knowledge modelling to support the synapsis of Successful Industrial Partnerships Ontologies classify all relevant information to Industrial Symbiosis, eg. Materials, Technologies, Production Workflows, Geographical Information. Registration and Matching are supported by sophisticated algorithms. 14

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ IS Portal Technology Advantage eSymbiosis supports partnerships, producing suggestions for matching, exploiting ‘technology knowledge’ and Best Practices for Industrial Symbiosis from global experience. Industrial Symbiosis experts are actively participating and supporting portal members engaging in IS Business Transactions. Partnership Results and Success Stories are integrated in the eSymbiosis Knowledge Base. 15

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ IS Portal The IS Portal is gradually coming alive. It will incorporate functions such as member communications, presence, information, forums, and expert blogs for consulting members and visitors on Industrial Symbiosis. It will facilitate Business Relationships Managements Business Transactions Consulting and Training. 16

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ Building the technology repository Technology repository: Focused on helping the matching process High level representation of Technologies Input/Output structure Drives for Technology data Regional drive IS best practice Integration with external resources 17

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ Distribution of Industrial Sectors in Viotia 18

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ Prioritizing Industrial Sectors in pilot region Metallurgical Industries Mineral Industries Chemical Industries Food Industries 19

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ Gathering Background Information and Data Collection priorities First Focus on: Material flows Waste stream specs Locations Extending knowledge with: Context description Inspection audits Commercial profile 20

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ Primary Information 21

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ The knowledge models are planned to be enriched with: Toxic waste Environmental records IPPC Techniques Liquid disposal Production stages Significant Information extensions to improve Quality of Decisions Physical properties of resources Volumes available to trade Cost of disposal Additional Modelled Information 22

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ Capitalizing on best practices and state-of-the-art Resources published and free accessible data Challenge: Translate cases into sharable knowledge Steps: Build components compatible with reference data Produce links with ontologies Actioned: Used publicly available descriptions of best practices in UK Steps: Selection of best practice cases Transformed information in appropriate form to integrate with ontologies 23

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/ The knowledge model was enriched with 250 Best Practices bringing knowledge to include: Sources Uses Volumes Produce Knowledge from use cases Material SourceApplication Quantity, Capacity 24
