Zahir Shah was replaced by Mohammad Daoud Khan who became president in In the 1960’s education was a primary focus in Kabul. The US as well as other countries assisted Kabul in receiving a higher education. Departments were built in psychology, agriculture, engineering and Science in an effort to educate the people in this city. This is an image of students who attended Kabul University

The Start of a War The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on December 24, 1979 and Afghanistan went into war for 10 years with the soviets. The war began in 1979 and ended in Kabul suffered greatly during this time because they were dealing with two local wars of their own. The country faced tragedy and the loss of thousands. The Taliban rose to power in Kabul and their University closed down. When the Taliban’s power diminished, The University re-opened. The number of teachers and students within the University was scarce due to the effects of the war.

Post- War After the war in Afghanistan came to an end economic conditions in Kabul were severely unstable. Parts of the government controlled urban areas that were once under mujahidin control.

Present Day Kabul The last battle for control over Afghanistan took place during the year Today Kabul has restored itself since the war in 1979 and is a major trade center. Kabul also houses many factories that produce items such as rayon, wool, furniture and wood.

Demographics In 2005 Kabul had a population of 2,994,00. Sunnite Tjiks make up most of the cities population along with the Shi’ite Hazaras. Most of the people living in Kabul are persian- speakers.

Demographics Kabul is located in east central Afghanistan. Kabul rests between the Asmai and Sherdarwaza mountains and also is the capital of the Islamic Republic in Afghanistan. The city of Kabul dates back to 1500 BC. It is estimated that the city is around 3,000 years old.

Class Structure Kabul has become diverse over the years, and different cultures and ethnicities live in the city. Although there are different ethnic groups in Kabul if you are a native to the city you are above a Pashtun or Tajik. At the bottom of the class structure are the Hazaras. They have low paying jobs and are illegal immigrants in most parts of Afghanistan. Since the 1970’s they have progressed to the middle class instead of being at the poverty level
