The Hazaras The Hazara people have distinct Mongolian features. They are they most oppressed minority group in Afghanistan. Scientists believe that Hazaras are descendants of Genghis Khan and his soldiers, who invaded in the 13th century (genetic tests). Hazaras live in central mountainous highlands called, Hazarajat. A Hazarajat is an underdeveloped rural area Hazaras are also Turkish people and are descendants of the Kushans (Larson). The main languages spoken by the Hazara people are Hazaragi, which is a dialect of Persian, and Farsi and Dari. Shi’a Muslims also known as the “Twelvers” (“World Directory”).

Shi’a Muslims Hazaras are Shi’a Muslim. Shi’a Muslims have faced prosecution and discrimination for centuries. Shi’a believe that the caliph should be spiritual and political and should be chosen by lineage. Shi’a Muslims have religious practices such as Muharram, and pilgrimages to the shrines of the Twelve Imams and their various descendants (“world Directory”). The teachings of Muhammad were carried out through his descendants and they believed that Ali should have been the caliph. Hazaras live by the Qur’an, the revelation of Muhammad written by his followers. The Pashtuns are Sunni Muslims and they want just the opposite.

History of the Hazaras Hazaras settled in Afghanistan in the thirteenth century. During the 20 th century, Hazaras were forced to migrate to Kabul because of prosecution, where they worked as laborers and market vendors. They were sold as slaves and a massacre killed more than half of the Hazara population in 1893 due to their political views (reign of Amir Abdul Rahman). Hazaras are not capable of getting the services they needed. Hazaras maintain low socio-economic statuses. During the 1960s and 1970s, Hazaras faced political oppression and were forced to conform, which prolonged the civil war for the past two decades. The Hazaras were prosecuted and driven out of their lands and the Taliban tried to dismiss them historically (“World Directory”).

The women The Women that are Hazara were treated terribly; worse than the men. Currently, the women are still struggling to gain basic rights after the Taliban, like most females in Afghanistan (Larson). http://www.google.com

Education Hazaras were not able to read or write. They did not attend school like the Pashtuns did. Hazaras were denied of basic rights, including the right to education. Hazara literacy rates are higher than the national average. Nearly all children, of both genders, attend school. They now have a reputation of having more job options (Larson). Famous for their music and poetry (“World Directory”). PastPresent

Role in Afghanistan The Hazara people were discriminated against and were not viewed as important. The Principle occupation of the Hazara people was farming and they dealt with animals. There weren't any industry jobs for the Hazara people. The Hazaras that went to find different services in other areas became shopkeepers, civil servants (low-grade), artisans, and urban factory workers (“Afghanistan- Hazara”).

Kite Fighting Kite fighting is a common form of recreation among Afghan men of all ages. The object is to maneuver one’s kite in order to cut the opponent’s line. The string of the kite is coated with a mixture of ground glass and glue. The lines are extremely sharp and dangerous, and the contests can result in severe injuries or death. Young children are especially at risk, since ran under the taut lines during a fight to pick up fallen kites (Larson).
