4 Afghanistan’s School System
Primary school (Grades 1-6)- Learning math, writing and reading Secondary school (Grades 7-9 & 10-12)- Must pass an entrance exam to get in Religious school- Reading the Koran Education is mandatory until you are 9 years old Teacher’s salaries are paid by the government 8.4 million students are enrolled in the education system in Afghanistan (Afghanistan: Education)

There are about 44 students per teacher in primary schools. (Primary in Afghanistan) Students are less likely to drop out if they start their education at 5 or 6 years old in primary school. (Afghanistan: Education)

6 Higher Education There are 19 higher education universities in Afghanistan Educational departments include medical, agricultural, language and literature, science and engineering In provincial directorate schools, there are 13 to 104 students in each class with about 50 students per teacher In humanitarian relief agencies, there are 12 to 51 students in each class with about 30 students per teacher

7 School Completion 68% of students drop out of school before completion of grade 6 (Afghanistan: Education) 55% of males complete primary school 21% of females complete primary school

Elementary School- K-5 Middle School- 6-8 High School- 9-12 Over 49 million kids are in public school Children can attend public school or private school

9 Colleges and Universities in the States
There are more than 7,000 colleges and universities with more than 15 million students (US Colleges and Universities) Some of the most common college majors are psychology, political science and computer science (Degree Directory) In 4 years of college, the average amount spent on tuition and fees at a public university is $36,000 (College Savings 101)

10 Graduation Rates in the US
75.5% of students in high school graduate About 1,550 high school students do not graduate (Layton) 55.5% of college students graduate (US Colleges and Universities) 33% of college students drop out 25% of the college students that drop out are freshman (Ritter)

11 Some colleges can have as many as 300,000 students!
High school classes with more than 25 students in them have lower test scores. (USA Today)
