Penguins Penguins spend most of their lives in water. In fact they are well adapted to water. Let’s look at some of those adaptations.

Penguin Adaptations 1 They have streamlined bodies to make it easy to swim through the water. 2 They have short stiff flippers that help them swim through the water rather than wings. 3 Paddle like feet to help them swim through the water. 4 The have a thick layer of insulating feathers to keep them warm in the cold water.. 5 Unlike most birds they have solid bones. The greater mass in the bones keeps them down in the water.

Penguin Adaptations 6 They trap a layer with their smooth plumage keeping them bouyant. 7 Penguins are ‘countershaded’ White underside, dark back. Keeps them camouflaged. 8 Penguins use their flippers and tails to keep themselves balanced. 9 They can drink saltwater and get rid of the excess salt from their blood.

Penguins As you can see Penguins are very well adapted to their watery environment.
