What causes air pollution?  Smog (ozone)  Gas that hurts the lungs. You can’t see or smell it  Sunlight turns car exhaust and industrial emissions into smog

How can air pollution harm you?  Have your lungs ever hurt when you’ve gone outside?  Have you had a hard time catching your breath?  Health Effects:  Irritated Eyes  Sore Throat  Cough  Headache  Chest Tightness  Shortness of Breath  Wheezing  Feel Tired  Nausea

What chemicals are in the air?  Carbon Monoxide  Where does it come from?  No color or smell  Gas  Nitrogen Acids  Comes during rush hour from cars  Hydrocarbons  Caused when petrol is not fully burnt  Particulates  Small  Dust and fumes in the air  Caused by vehicles, factories, and burning coal for heating

Smog Alert!  What can you do when the air is not healthy?  Avoid running and bicycling outside  Play indoors  Pay attention to how you feel  Drink a lot of fluids  Avoid dust, smoke, and sprays  Carpool
