Locating Books and Materials in the Garland Library Using the Online Catalog

Library Catalog A record or a “catalog” of all informational materials that are located in the library It may be a card catalog or an electronic online catalog accessible through the internet Each catalog entry contains basic information (title, author publisher, date) and subject matter of a the book or material The entry also provides information on where the book or material can be found in the library- the Call Number.

Searching the Library Catalog To access the catalog, go to the College homepage ( and click on “Library” in Grey Menu Bar. Choose “Online Catalog”.

Searching the Catalog Choose the location to search.

From the dropdown menu highlight the type of search based on the information known about the material. For general searches on a topic, Use the Keyword or Subject Search.

A sample Title Search for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer at Tusculum College. Note that the initial article “the” was left off. When searching for titles, begin the search with the first major word that appears.

The results of the search indicate there are a total of 8 entries for the title-7 entries at Tusculum and 1 entry at Tusculum and other libraries. Click on the blue hyperlink to see a list of the 7 entries.

7 entries include 5 electronic resources and 1 physical book. Choose the hyperlink or the Full record icon

Bibliographic information and location of this physical book and circulation status. The call number is the address of the book on the shelf. Write down the entire call number. An electronic book record with a link to the full text book online

Finding the book on the shelf The call number of this particular volume of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is: PZ 3 C59 Ad

Insert video here Look for the Library of Congress letter designation “PZ” in the book stacks then, on the PZ shelf area, look for the number following, in this case, “3”.
