TAYLOR AND MACKENZIE Scotland

Economy In Scotland they are trying to create 500 jobs. They’ve done this by awarding the contract for the M80 Stepps Haggs project. By doing this they have created 1’300 jobs. People in Scotland think that now is not the time for political differences. They also think that Scotland’s government and the parliament should share the full financial responsibilities It is a market based and a centrally planned economy. It has the third largest GDP, in the U.K. Scotland is a world leader in manufacturing and shipbuilding related industries.

Government The government of Scotland is mainly like ours, except it’s a constitutional monarchy, which means it has a queen. They do have a prime minister who makes the laws but, they have to go through the queen to pass. The bills go through seven stages, just like us. Here we have a vote, but there it is heredity which means a son, daughter, or close relative would go in. If someone gets caught violating the law the police will stop it. Luckily Scotland cares about the human rights.

Sports A common sport is Shinty, played with a ball and stick. It is played in the highlands of Scotland. Field hockey and Shinty are not the same they have important differences, like in Shinty you are allowed to tackle with the stick. Another sport is Rugby, it is a full contact team sport. The teams will have thirteen people. Another sport is Cricket but its not very popular.

Food Scottish food is very rich and unique. Whisky is a very popular drink in Scotland. Haggis is the most traditional and well known food. Haggis may sound gross to us, but to them it’s one of the main meals. And don’t judge all Scottish food to be like haggis.

Language In Scotland there is no official language. But one of the main languages is English de Facto. So their language is standard English. Most people there, if they are born there, have an accent.

Traditions Most men don’t usually where anything under their kilt. When women get married they will usually wear a sash across their dress. There will be a person playing the bagpipes when the bride walks down the isle. Men, on there wedding day, wear a kilt, a kilt jacket and a sporran which is kind of like a little bag they wear across their waist. An old tradition is when the groom carries rocks on his back from one end of the village to the other until the bride comes out and kisses him.

Holidays New Years in Scotland is called Hogmany Some people say that Hogmany came from a French song people sang on Cake Day. In Scotland, Hogmany is way more important than Christmas. For Valentine’s Day kids would go around town getting money, candy, and fruit. And the teenagers would play a game that if your name and another persons names of the opposite gender had been pulled from a hat three times they would get married!

Clothing Kilts are the most popular clothing item in Scotland. Sporran will usually be leather and decorated with seal skin, fur, or polished metal platings. Highland dancers wear a knee length kilt, socks folded just below the knee, and a vest. In the 16th century kilts were only used for highland games.

Religion In Scotland Christianity is the biggest religion and the churches are called kirks Here’s a diagram of the religion Church of Scotland 42% No Religion 28% Other Christian 8% Roman Catholic 16% No Answer 5% Islam 0.5% Buddhism 0.1% Sikhism 0.1% Judaism 0.1% Hinduism 0.1% Other Religion 0.5%

Houses Most people live in town houses. Only a few very rich people live in castles. The castles there are made from stone, with many towers, and sometimes there are parts that aren't even connected.

Climate The climate of Scotland is temperate and can be very extreme and changeable. Temperate means when a country or place has all four seasons, like us By the Gulf Stream it has become very warmed by this we mean that the weather has became warmer. In Scotland rainfall totals around Scotland, the wettest place in Europe is Northern Highlands it gets 4577mm of rain each year that's really wet! In the eastern part of Scotland receives less that 870mm of rain annually that's because they are in the shadow of the western uplands. In part of the highlands they get around snow days per year. And some parts of the western coastal region get 0-6 snow days a year. By hearing this you probably think Scotland is pretty cold but it's climate can be very humid.

Landforms Scotland is very mountainous. It's not a very good place for farming. It's only one-third of the northern part of Scotland. mining is very popular. the most popular minerals are zinc, iron, and coal. The longest river is River Tay which is 193km. Lake in Scotland are called lochs, except for Lake Mentieth.

The End We Hope you enjoyed our presentation on Scotland
