Scotland in Great Britain is famous for its traditions and customs. The annual tradition The Highland Games is held in the different places of the Scottish Highlands. The Highlands are in the north of Scotland. This is a region of mountains and rivers, small towns and villages. The Highlands are a country of great sea-lochs. On the sides of some of the lochs there are farms which can only be reached by boat.

In the 11th century, Scottish King Malcolm III organised contests in a Scottish village called Braemar to find the strongest and fastest men in his kingdom. Those who were the strongest became the king's bodyguards and those who were the fastest became his messengers. The Highland Games were very spectacular and many people came to Braemar when the contest was held. Some wanted to take part, others just came as visitors.

Now the Highland Games do not only take place in Scottish villages and towns, but also in many other countries where Scottish people have settled. And today's games also attract many visitors.

The Highlands Games open and close with impressive ceremonies.

As you see, Highland Dress is the traditional costume worn by Scottish men on important occasions. Its main parts are a tartan kilt, a sporran and a small knife which is put in the top of the stockings.

Scottish Highland Games, at which sports (including tossing the caber, throwing the hammer and tug of war), dancing and piping competition take place, attract large number of spectators from all over the world. The atmosphere at the Highland Games is great. 13 Sword dance is a war dance. You should be careful not to touch the crossed swords as you dance. Men and women are dancing a Reel, a quick and cheerful Scottish dance. Dances back

The features common to Highland Games are bagpipe, dancing competitions and Torchlight Ceremony. The highlanders play music on the bagpipes. The piper blows air into a bag. He holds this bag under his arm and presses the air into the other pipes. In this way the music never stops. The bagpipes make a very loud sound. sound.

This is Parade of Tartans where the members of each clan are announced to visitors and honored guests as they march together around the parade field. Every highlander is a member of one of the big families, or clans, of Scotland. And all of the people of one clan have the same name and wear the same tartan.

The nighttime programme is known as a Torchlight Ceremony or Calling of the Clans. This is where a representative from each clan comes forward adding their torch to a large bonfire; remembering the days of old when the clans gathered in Scotland.
