Associated Press a not-for-profit news cooperative owned by its American newspaper and worldwide broadcast members that gathers and shares news in all formats from around the world. APImages is it’s multimedia branch: images, videos, graphs, audio. Students at CPU has a paid subscription to use it for free. When Barak Obama first ran for president a street artist named Shepard Fairey saw a chance to make some money. Shepard Fairey. Source: Associated Press.

He used the Associated Press picture of Obama to create this poster Source: Associated Press.

It became very popular and he sold a lot of posters and made lots of money. Source: Associated Press.

Associated Press saw it and said – “Wait a minute – that poster is copyright infringement – it’s based on a photograph one of our photographers took! “

Guilty or Not Guilty?

Associate Press sued Mr. Fairey and eventually after a lot of lawsuits and trouble costing him a lot of money in lawyers...

The case ended up being dropped because Fairey who at first claimed he used a different photograph admitted that he did use the AP photo. It was illegal for him to try to hide the fact that he used the AP photo. He was sentenced to two years of probation, 300 hours of community service, and a fine of $25,000.probationcommunity service
