Knowledge Transfer Networks Funded by the Technology Strategy Board. “.. primary aim is not the creation of knowledge - where Government separately invests over £3 billion per annum - but the translation of knowledge into innovation and new and improved products and services.”

What they Are: - A Conduit –Vehicle for the community to develop ideas & interactions; –Communications route between the community & Government –Playing increasingly significant role in development of UK Technology Strategy & as focal points for Technology Programme. Funding calls High Value Manufacturing Deadline: 26 February The TSB seeks to invest £24m in UK manufacturing companies to maintain and develop their international competitiveness. European Collaborative Materials R&D Opens: March 2009 Indicative budget of 1.5M euro allocated to support UK industry and associated S&T organisations within a 20M euro collaborative Materials R&D programme [MATERA+]. Energy Generation and Supply Opens: 16 March 2009 Indicative amount of £10m allocated to invest in highly innovative collaborative research and development in Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Technologies

Funding calls Industrial CASE studentships 2009 Deadline: 10 March 2009 The Sensors & Instrumentation KTN (SiKTN) has been allocated 2 Industrial CASE studentships for 2009 by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Industrial CASE provides funding for PhD studentships where businesses take the lead in arranging projects with an academic partner of their choice. Industry interchange programme Deadline: 10 March 2009 This scheme by BBSRC aims to support short-term exchanges that provide strategic advantage to the UK science base and industry arising from reciprocal access to facilities, expertise and/or knowledge, and an increased understanding of scientific issues of common concern. The Royal Society Industry fellowships scheme Deadline: 12 March 2009 The scheme aims to enhance knowledge transfer in science and technology between industry and academia. Appointments funded by BBSRC, the Royal Society, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Natural Environment Research Council, Rolls-Royce plc and AZ.

Funding calls Knowledge Exchange Call Deadline 3 March 2009 This call enables the sharing and flow of knowledge, people, skills and expertise between the UK's research base and the user community (public and private sector). Open to applicants based in UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), NERC Research & Collaborative Centres, and Independent Research Organisations (IROs) approved by NERC. i4i Invention for Innovation, funded by the NHS This programme wishes to invite project proposals of up to 12 months to investigate first whether a piece of prior basic research or an innovative use of an existing technology could provide a solution to an existing or emerging healthcare need Royal Society Enterprise Fund This exciting new initiative from the Royal Society was created to make equity investments in innovative early-stage businesses emerging from the science base in the UK and elsewhere.

Funding calls Science and technology research call 2009 The Home Office is seeking outline research and development proposals against particular broad unclassified chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) research requirements for commissioning projects early in financial year 2009/2010 DIUS Measurement for Innovators programme This programme is designed to promote innovation by linking industry with the world class expertise and facilities contained within the UK's National Measurement Institutes (NMI) - NPL, LGC, NEL and NWMLLGCNELNWML Translation Awards (funded by the Wellcome Trust) These awards are response-mode funding designed to bridge the funding gap in the commercialisation of new technologies in the biomedical area. Industrial Partnership Awards Deadline: apply at any time Funded by BBSRC. Science-led, responsive mode grants where an industrial partner contributes in cash (not ‘in-kind’) at least 10% of the full economic cost of the project. Applicants should be registered in the UK or have a UK R&D or manufacturing site.

Current Status: Over 2000 member organisations (approximately 25% involved in Research) Estimate of market size measured by organisations is ~ Over 3000 attendees at events. Leveraged £33m of R&D and VC funding to date.
