3 Driving Innovation What is the Technology Strategy Board? “The UK’s Innovation Agency” Set up in 2007 to invest in business-led innovation, promoting the application of science & technology £750m over 3 years (plus co-funding of over £300m from RCs, as well as other co-funders) Budget for 2011-12 to 2014-15 > £1bn Working across business, public sector, academia, regional and central government Staffed mainly from the private sector

13 Driving Innovation Strand 1 – CR&D Two stage CR&D competition up to £2.4m Key features –Must be collaborative, business led and have end users as part of the project –Focus on industrial research with total project costs between £500k - £1m, lasting 2 to 3 years Key dates –Registration deadline noon 13 th March –Expression of interest noon 20 th March –Stage two (for invited applications) opens 15 th April –Deadline for stage two submissions noon 29 th May

14 Driving Innovation Strand 2 – feasibility Single stage competition up to £2m Key features –Early stage technical feasibility studies, must be led by business, single company or collaborative – Total project costs between £125k and £175k, up to 12 months Key dates –Registration deadline noon 13 th March –Application deadline noon 20 th March

15 Driving Innovation Strand 3 – KTP Thematic KTP competition up to £1m Key features –Embedding innovation in companies looking to solve business problems by accessing UK based knowledge and skills –A partnership between a business, academic institution and a recently qualified person –Typical annual project costs £60k with a third being contributed by the company (for SMEs) Key dates –Deadline for applications noon 19 th June for final Partnership Approvals Group (PAG) meeting –Funding outcomes August 2013

16 Driving Innovation Scope Focus on innovation in power electronics Clearly address one or more of the seven challenge areas Identify clear business opportunities for the UK (national/international) Encouraging ideas that look at cross sector working e.g. transport working with energy

17 Driving Innovation Challenges (1/2) development of power electronics devices, components, converters and systems that ensure distribution networks are able to accommodate increasing levels of embedded generation and emerging technologies innovative materials, device, component and monitoring technologies that can help improve system performance and manage reliability by reducing costs, losses, and the need for maintenance of systems that are required to operate in a range of extreme environments systems approaches to reduce costs, enable simpler systems through standardisation – including development of appropriate ICT embedded systems, control systems and early stage design devices, components, products and processes that can be transferred from other markets and can meet the challenges of the energy sector

18 Driving Innovation Challenges (2/2) development of MW power electronics devices, components, converters and systems for the conversion of variable voltage inputs into fixed voltage for connection to the grid from new renewable generation plants – including aggregated community scale renewables. Development of MW-scale converters in Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) to support the existing AC grid. high voltage DC systems using GW-scale power electronics converters to boost voltages for transmission over long distances – for application in offshore wind and the European supergrid.

19 Driving Innovation Deliverables A tangible outcome, e.g. –Small scale technology demonstration –Pilot system or process demonstrator We will be working beyond the competition phase to follow up on events and community building, e.g. –Collaboration Nation in 2014, including CR&D and KTP progress updates –Working with stakeholders to develop the community

20 Driving Innovation Out of scope In-vehicle power electronics technologies that are not translatable into the challenges highlighted (this is covered by our low carbon vehicle programme) Development of “smart home” power electronics-related applications that are not translatable into the challenges highlighted (this is covered by our low impact building programme)
