Numbers of Tourists to Kenya , , , , ,000 Why has the number of tourists visiting Kenya increased in the last fifty years? The Growth of Tourism in Kenya

The Tourism Explosion There are now over 100 million jobs throughout the world which are related to tourism. One in five of the world’s workers is employed in a tourist-related job. So why has there been a recent explosion?

Why has tourism grown in countries like the UK? Internet

Why has tourism grown in countries like the UK? Internet more people take early retirement more leisure time improved transportation

Guess the statistic 1961 ? % of UK workers had 2 weeks or less paid holiday 1991 ? % of UK workers had 4 weeks or more paid holiday ? % of Britons owned a car 1990 one vehicle per family (on average) Can you think of 2 other reasons why we go on more holidays than previous generations? Guess the statistic …

% of UK workers had 2 weeks or less paid holiday % of UK workers had 4 weeks or more paid holiday % of Britons owned a car Other reasons include – the rise in air travel; increasing wage rates (disposable income).

Growth Factors Increased Wealth. More disposable income to be spent on leisure. Increased Mobility. More people own cars, and can afford to take trains, ferries & planes. Improved Accessibility. Modern highways, ports and airports make it easier to get to destinations. Increased Leisure Time. People work shorter hours, and have more paid holidays. They have more time to go on holiday. Also, many people retire early, and life expectancy is increasing in most countries. For each of these, try to visualise the factor. Spend a minute or so doing this for all 4. The more ridiculous your image the better.

Growth Factors (Cont’d) Technology Change. Development of jet engines, computerised booking systems, Internet access, ATM machines etc. Product Innovation. From the package tour to tailored trips, cruises, long-haul travel) Changing Lifestyles. Outdoor activities growing in popularity. People value their leisure time more. Closer family relationships. Changing nature of ‘holidays’ (no longer seen as two-weeks in the sun. Mini-breaks, activity holidays etc.). Promotion (Travel agents, TV shows and advertising put travel in the minds of people). As before

Increased Wealth. Increased Mobility. Improved Accessibility. Increased Leisure Time. Technology Change. Product Innovation. Changing Lifestyles. Changing nature of ‘holidays’ Promotion Now spend a further minute recalling your images

Now list as many reasons as possible for the tourism explosion in the last 50 years… you should be able to recall 9 in total. Add any extra details you can think of to go with each one.

Add to the star diagram, reasons why people visit Kenya as tourists.

Now decide which of the reasons you have added to your star diagram are part of the (H) Human landscape and which are part of the (P) Physical Landscape Add a (P) or (H) next to each one. Only use (P)/(H) combined if you need to.

Now answer the following question: With reference to a less developed country you know or have studied, describe the human and physical factors which have encouraged tourism there (6). To score full marks you should: Refer to actual place names inside the country Use geography key words as much as possible Separate the human from the physical (divide your answer in half?)
