Pre-Ignition and Detonation Instructional Animation Created By: Nikolas Fernald

Destination Future 1 st job working in product development –Professional Experience –Drafted for countless hours using AutoCAD 2 nd year CAD classes planned –Class canceled –Preparatory class for upcoming project!

EETC Equipment Engine Training Council Over sees –Trade School’s –High school small engine programs Father visiting many schools –Need developing for an explanation

Essential Question An animation to end confusion led to essential question! “How can I create a simple visual to demonstrate engine failure?”

The Idea! Need developed essential question Evident confusion between Pre- Ignition & Detonation Failures A better explanation needed Project to create useful explanation

My Product Simple walkthrough 4 minutes,.avi file 3D animations, Digital Picture & descriptive text

What I Wanted Chose animation for many reasons: –Teach myself Solidworks –Create an impressive product Something that Mattered –Learn about the engineering field

Focused Program of Study Connection Industrial Engineering Systems Use of Solidworks –Parametric Modeling technology Virtually built 3D part Engineering tool –Data used to manufacture actual part Assembly can be animated with proper restraints.

Will something go my way so I can start? Solidworks Animator issues –Stress beginning to form –Jim Pfaltzgraff saved me! Time management issues –Class first 2 weeks –Decided to leave for work VERY early

Planning As project developed: –Couldn’t fall behind! Plan of Action Calendar Set up Goals –Work hard, have fun, learn everything I could! Create something very Comprehensive –No book contained all information –Looks Professional

Status Reports Weekly reports & journal entries –Forced planning and work documentation –Helped visualize week ahead Planning leading to Decisions –Project Layout, reading text, ect. –Many miniscule decisions

Status Reports (continued) Communicated with Advisor –Questions of concerns & needs Showed Growth! –Cold calling –Determination 4:45 mornings 160+ hours of work

Finished Product “How can I create a simple visual to demonstrate engine failure?” Animated 3D digital model –Showing working and failing cycles Many sources utilized throughout project

My Experts! Jim Pfaltzgraff –Solidworks consultant Frank Sierra –Macromedia Flash consultant Rod Harms –Small engine expert John Dorrance –Project management consultant Pete Fernald –Industry expert

Integrating 12 Years of School Animations legacy will take time Physics, Chemistry, & Shop –Workings of an engine Math & AutoCAD –Drafting skills Speech & others –Communications Skills Communicating with engineers: –Use their own language –Difficult to explain problems to

Community Consultant John Dorrance PE Resident of Cincinnati, Ohio –Works at home –1 week per month works in Portland Worked on Project management –For his sake and mine –Focused work tasks Trusted John to get me though –Couldn’t thank him enough!

Community Project Hopefully will end misconceptions Accomplishments work toward career goals My longest and most comprehensive project Prepared me for the future

Work Ethic 160+ Hours of work!!! Luckily, no disaster situations! –Calm & Cool personality Struggled with names of parts –Turned into a new hobby

What I’ve Learned Strengths: –Great work ethic –Very precise Paperwork… –Grew though dislike –Understood value Video editing / producing –HARD! –Wouldn't be a good career choice

My Future! Senior Year Ahead! Plan to Study Aerospace Engineering Possible Schools: –University of Texas –University of Missouri, Rolla Future Employer: –NASA! –Lockheed Martin Skunk Works division
