Learning mathematics … requires understanding and being able to apply procedures, concepts and processes. In the twenty-first century, all students should be expected to understand and be able to apply mathematics. NCTM, Principles and Standards, 2000.

Mathematical Processes The Actions of Mathematics Ways of acquiring and using the content, knowledge, and skills of mathematics Not new Life long learning

Mathematical Processes Communicating Problem Solving “communicate solutions to problems in appropriate mathematical forms …” p. 20, Gr. 9 & 10, 1999 Representing

Mathematical Processes Communicating Problem Solving “- present solutions to patterning problems and explain the thinking behind the solution process;” p. 60, Grades 1 - 8, 1997 Reasoning and Proving

Select one of the Mathematical Process pages and meet the “experts” at the designated table. Read the detailed description of your process. Discuss and summarize your mathematical process by selecting one or two main ideas and incorporating them into the following: The important thing about is (process name) (insert a statement that captures the essence of the process). Expert Group Task

“Save the Last Word” Return to your home group. In turn, experts hold up their card for group to read. The group discusses each process expectation. (1 minute) The expert holding each process card has “the last word.”

Process Matching Game Cut out phrases in each row. Match each phrase with the correct Mathematical Process. Paste into place on BLM 1.3b

Reflection Two things I hope to gain from this learning series. The expertise I bring to this workshop.

Home Activity Explain the ‘gears’ metaphor used for the Mathematical Processes. Reflection Journal:
