Graph Ordered Pairs By Mr. Bales

Objective By the end of this lesson, you will be able to graph ordered pairs and find the lengths of line segments on a coordinate grid. Standard 4MG2.2 - Students will understand that the length of a horizontal line segment equals the difference of the x- coordinates. Standard 4MG2.3 - Students will understand that the length of a horizontal line segment equals the difference of the y- coordinates.

Introduce On your desk you have a coordinate grid. Watching me, let’s place a star on the grid? What ordered pair names the location of the star? (3, 5) Place a dot at (6, 5) Move from point (3, 5) to (6, 5). How did you get there? Place a dot at (6, 2) Move from (6, 5) to (6, 2). How did you get there?

Mallory and Nicole Mallory and Nicole are on a treasure hunt. What ordered pair gives the location of the treasure?

Graph point B at (- 3, 4) Start at (0,0) Move 3 units to the left. Then, move up 4 units. Graph point B at (- 3, 4) B Let’s watch Mrs. Veraghese do this problem!!

Find the length of the line segment between each set of ordered pairs (-1, 4) (-1, 2) The line segment is vertical. Subtract the y- coordinates 4-2 = 2 The length is 2 units.

Find the length of the line segment between each set of ordered pairs. (1, -3)(4, -3) The line segment is horizontal. Subtract the x- coordinates 4-1 = 3 The length is 3 units

Bales Bucks Find the length of the line segment between each set of ordered pairs. (4, 7), (4, 12) (4, -2), (6, -2) (5, -12), (5, 0) (-4, 8), (-4, 17)
