2 Objectives I will learn to:
Find coordinates and Quadrants of points on the Coordinate Plane Graph points on a coordinate plane. Find horizontal and vertical distances on the coordinate plane.

3 Vocabulary Coordinate Plane is formed by two number lines, the x-axis and the y-axis.

4 Vocabulary The two axis intersect at right angles and divide the plane into 4 quadrants.

5 Vocabulary The intersection of the two axis is called ORIGIN. The coordinates of origin is (0,0) The location of a point (coordinates) on the coordinate plane is given as an ordered pair. In an ordered pair (x, y) the first number always represents the x value while the second number represents the y value.

6 Graphing Points on the Coordinate Plane
Graph each point. A. T(–4, 4) Start at the origin. T(–4, 4) Move 4 units left and 4 units up. B. U(0, –5) Start at the origin. Move 5 units down. C. V (–2, –3) V(–2, −3) Start at the origin. U(0, –5) Move 2 units left and 3 units down.

7 Finding Horizontal and Vertical Distances
Whenever the segments are horizontal or vertical, the length can be obtained by counting. When we need to find the length (distance) of a segment such as AB, we simply COUNT the distance from point A to point B. (AB = ___) We can use this same counting approach for CD . (CD = ___) 7 3

You can also find the HORIZONTAL or VERTICAL distance by subtracting the values within the ordered pairs. Distance between Point A (-4, 2) and Point B (3, 2) can be also found by subtracting the x coordinates. -4 – 3 = -7 Absolute value of -7 is 7 therefore the distance is 7

You can also find the HORIZONTAL or VERTICAL distance by subtracting the values within the ordered pairs. Distance between Point C (-4, -1) and Point D (-4, -4) can be also found by subtracting the x coordinates. -1 – (-4) = 3 Distance between points C and D is 3

You can also find the HORIZONTAL or VERTICAL distance by subtracting the values within the ordered pairs. Warning: The distance between point E and F (diagonal segment) CANNOT be found using the same principle.

11 Identifying the Quadrant of an ordered pair.
Identify in which quadrant each point is located. II 𝐴 (−3, 4) III 𝐵 (−3, −2) IV 𝐶 (2, −5) 𝐷 (−1, 1) II 𝐷 (0, 8) Between I and II On y-axis
