Perimeter By Mr. Bales

Objective By the end of this lesson, you will be able to find the perimeter of a polygon. Standard 4MG1.4 - Students will understand and use formulas to solve problems involving perimeters…..of rectangles and squares. StandardAF1.4 - Students will use and interpret formulas to answer questions about quantities and relationships. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to find the perimeter of a polygon. 5 Introduce Using the pipe cleaner at your table, work with a partner and measure the length of the pipe cleaner with a ruler to the nearest centimeter. What geometric figure is the pipe cleaner? Once that is done, twist the two ends of the pipe cleaner together. Make a shape or figure with your pipe cleaner and trace it on the lined paper at your desk. Measure each side of your shape. Add all the sides up together. Was the total you added close to the original measurement of the pipe cleaner? What are some other tools used to measure the distance around each object? 7 Perimeter The distance around a figure is called the perimeter.

Perimeter of a Rectangle The perimeter equals the sum of the lengths of the sides. Or, perimeter equals 2 times the length plus 2 times the width. Formula: P = l + l + w + w P = (2 x l) + (2 x w) The perimeter equals the sum of the lengths of the sides. Or, perimeter equals 2 times the length plus 2 times the width. Formula: P = l + l + w + w P = (2 x l) + (2 x w) l w w l

Find Perimeter One Way: Use addition Add the measures of all the sides of the figure P = 6 + 6 + 12 + 12 P = 36 yards One Way: Use addition Add the measures of all the sides of the figure P = 6 + 6 + 12 + 12 P = 36 yards Another way: Use the formula Multiply the length and the width by 2. Then add. P = (2 x l) + (2 x w) P = (2 x 12) + (2 x 6) P = 24 + 12 or 36 yards Distance: How far did Cade walk?

Find Perimeter One Way: Use addition Add the measures of all the sides of the figure. P = 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 P = 24 inches One Way: Use addition Add the measures of all the sides of the figure. P = 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 P = 24 inches Another Way: Use the formula Multiply the length of one side by 4 because there are 4 sides of equal length P = 4 x side length P = 4 x 6 P = 24 inches Find the perimeter of a square with side lengths of 6 inches. 6 in.
