DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP Prof. Jintae Kim, PhD Alliance Theological Seminary (845) ext Website:

DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP “Leadership is the ability to get a person to do what you want him to do, when you want it done, in a way you want it done, because he wants to do it.” (Dwight D. Eisenhower in Galloway 1990, 87).

“Leadership is … doing the right things.” (Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus) “Leadership is mastering paradoxes and what they stand for.” (Tom Peters)

“Leadership is a reciprocal relationship between those who choose to lead and those who decide to follow.” (Kouzes & Posner 1993, 1) “Leadership is influence.” (Maxwell 1993, 1; J. Oswald Sanders)

It is “a dynamic process over an extended period of time in various situations in which a leader utilizing leadership resources and by specific leadership behaviors, influences the thoughts and activities of followers toward accomplishment of aims usually mutually beneficial for leaders, followers, and the macro context of which they are a part.” (Clinton 1988, 213)

“Leadership is when persons with certain motives and purposes mobilize, in competition or conflict with others, institutional, political, psychological and other resources so as to arouse, engage and satisfy the motives of followers.” (James McGregor Burns)

“Leadership is getting others to want to do something you are convinced should be done.” (Vance Packard) “Leadership is mobilizing others toward a goal shared by the leader and followers.” (Garry Willis)

DEFINITION OF LEADER “A Leader is a person you will follow to a place you wouldn’t go by yourself.” (Barker 1992, 163).

DEFINITION OF BIBLICAL LEADER “A person with God-given capacity and God-given responsibility to influence a specific group of God’s people towards His purposes for the group” (Clinton 1988, 213)

“A Christian leader is someone who is called by God to lead; leads with and through christlike character; and demonstrates the functional competencies that permit effective leadership to take place.” (Barna 1997, 25)

WHAT LEADERS DO (Barna 1997, 31-44) They relate. They organize. They achieve. They think. They envision. They endure. They make good things happen.
