To strengthen the capacities to adapt and improve protection measures to maintain the biodiversity and natural eco-systems  Supporting and strengthening capacities of protected areas  Setting common tools and methodologies and strengthening of networks between protected areas  Cooperation between protected areas and regional partners (public authorities)  Definition of common answers regarding strategies, management structures and governance mechanisms Types of actions: Designing common approaches and strategies at transnational level Studying and mapping certain categories of ecosystems and their principal threats in order to improve their understanding, management and protection Developing information services Developing protection plans Creating or developing networks of experts to support public authorities in decision making processes Developing integrated strategies and tools for the sustainable management of protected and highly valuable areas (biodiversity, landscapes, eco-systems, etc.) Drafting public policies Promoting joint charters, protocols, and MoU in implementing management strategies for sustainable management of protected areas Addressing pollution or deterioration of protected natural habitats (including water and waste management) SPECIFIC PRIORITY AXIS 3.2: To maintain biodiversity and natural ecosystems through strengthening the management and networking of protected areas

Capitalisation of past experiences: we are not starting from scratch!

Specific attention to four types of areas:  Coastal areas with high level of attractiveness, important concentration of activities and fragility of natural and cultural resources  Urban areas as centres of innovation and socioeconomic activities and which are confronted to strong environmental challenges with pollution and GHG emissions Islands that cover 4% of the Mediterranean and represent a major economic, environmental and cultural dimension of the MED area  Rural areas characterised by rural activities and low density of population.
