The Hip Hop movement started New York City in working class neighborhoods in the late 1970s. Many saw the beginning of Hip Hop were in the Bronx borough, namely the South Bronx. The Hip Hop sound can be categorized by rhythmic beats with percussion emphasis. Usually rap would be put on top of the beat and rappers would try to rap with the rhythm eat and catch every beat.

This style began during the 1970s. The genre of Hip Hop is a mixture of R&B and Soul. This style incorporates poetry and meaning into the lyrics. Neo Soul is very different from other styles of Hip Hop, it does not really focus on things like parties, drinking and sex. Artists focus more on expressing feelings and motivating people with powerful lyrics. If I Ain’t Got You – Alicia Keys

The use of real instruments and a band instead of produced beats is what sets rapcore apart from other genres of hip hop. This style of Hip Hopstyle started in the late 80’s, however received mainstream success throughout the 1990’s. Rapcore’s pioneers were a group named the Beastie Boys. Fight For Your Right by the Beastie Boys

Conscious rap focuses on creating awareness and imparting knowledge to the listeners. Most songs contain positive, uplifting messages delivered over smooth beats. This style of Hip- Hop was popularized in the 1990s. Conscious rappers view the world, analyze it, dissect it and rap about what they have uncovered. Since conscious rappers often create music for a small market and usually it is not made for the radio. They are generally less “successful” than their mainstream counterparts; with the exception of a few, like Nas and Kanye West. I Can by Nas
