2  Music in the 1980s continued the diversity that began in the late 60s-70s.  Musical genres such as New Wave, Heavy Metal and Hip-Hop became commercially successful.

3  Much of the music of the 80s was characterized by unheard of electronic sounds accomplished through the use of synthesizers and keyboards, along with drum machines.

4  In the United States, MTV was launched and music videos began to have a huge effect on the record industry. U.S. Pop artists such as Duran Duran, Madonna and Michael Jackson mastered the format and turned it into big business.

5  MTV appears on August 1, 1981 at 12:01 a.m. and begins to influence and change the recording industry.

7  New Wave and Synthpop were developed by many British and American artists, and became popular phenomena throughout the decade, especially in the early and mid eighties.

8  Hard rock, heavy metal, Big Hair Bands and Glam metal, experienced extreme popularity in 1980s, becoming one of the most dominating music genres of the 1980s.

9  The Hip hop scene continued to evolve, gaining recognition and exhibiting a stronger influence on the music industry.  Hip hop music is a music genre typically consisting of a rhythmic vocal style called rap which is accompanied with backing beats.

10  Hip hop music is part of hip hop culture, which began in the Bronx, in New York City in the 1970s, predominantly among African Americans. The term rap music is often used synonymously with hip hop music.

11  Punk rock continued to make strives in the musical community, it gave birth to many sub-genres like hardcore and emo.
