Despite Haiti’s poverty and violence, art is embedded in Haitian culture. Did you know: Haiti is the poorest country in our hemisphere (even before the earthquake). Most Haitians live on $2 or less per day ($1USD=47 Gourdes) An earthquake in 2010 devastated the already impoverished country.

Comparing Mississippi to Haiti… Mississippi’s land area: 48,430 sq. miles Haiti’s land area: 10,714 sq. miles Mississippi’s population: 2.0 million people Haiti’s population: 9.8 million people Mississippi’s population density: 63.5 people per sq. mile Haiti’s population density: people per sq. mile.

Haitian Culture The culture of Haiti has strong West African roots, as well as French roots due to the French colonization of Haiti. The national language is Haitian Creole (Kreyòl) – derived from French. Music is a huge part of Haitian culture – Haitians love to sing and dance!

The Art of Haiti – DRAPO BANNERS

Drapos Haiti is a nation rich with art. Drapos are one of the most celebrated genres of Haitian art. Usually made of satin, velvet, rayon, and adorned with sequins, beads, or appliques. Lots of religious imagery and symbolism in drapo banners. They are often used in religious ceremonies. These banners are often used as narratives to tell a story. These beautiful flags represent the rich, colorful culture of Haiti.
