2  The Dominican Republic covers 2/3 of an island called Hispaniola in the Caribbean. The rest of the island is the country of Haiti.  Mountains cover most of the country. There are deserts in the southwest.  Sugarcane and coconuts are grown there.  The weather is usually warm and sunny.
