Teaching methods and material – the experience in Danish Standards Workshop on standards education 9. oktober 2012

Who am I?  Consultant in Danish Standards for 5 years  Working with research and education the past 2 years

Two main themes  Education is closely connected to research  Interesting and knowledge based education requires research  Experiences from Danish Standards  An overview of methods of cooperating with and reaching students that we have good experience with in Danish Standard

Tekstslide i punktform Rubrik, helst 1 linje Brug ”Forøg/Formindsk indryk” for at få de forskellige niveauer frem Education is closely connected to research  Education is closely connected to research  Interesting and knowledge based education requires research  Arguments:  Researchers also often teach  Researchers produce articles and other material usable for teaching  Courses (at university level) must be based on research (at least in Denmark)  Research will provide the teacher with interesting perspectives and valid knowledge

Experiences from Danish Standards  In Danish Standards we have worked intensively with strengthening the relation between standardization and education/research and increasing awareness amongst the target group  We have had good experience with:  Guest lecturing  Establishing an industrial PhD  Attending career fairs/exhibitions  Making educational material  Cooperate with master thesis students  Assuring access to standards  Providing cases for educational purposes

Guest lecturing  Danish Standards offer guest lectures to the university (and other edu. institutions)  We can provide the teachers with a different and often practical perspective  We can help the teacher include standardization in the class – not all teachers feel comfortable teaching standardization Facts  22 of our experts give guest lectures within their area of expertise  We have a long list of topics on our web site, and people can contact us with special wishes – if not mentioned on the web site.  A broad number of topics – environment, building/construction, management, CE-marking, LCA etc.  9 guest lectures the past two years (three more planned in October and November 2012)

An example

 An interview with Michael Z. Hauschild from the Technical University of Denmark about guest lectures from Danish Standards:  index=19&feature=plpp_video index=19&feature=plpp_video

An industrial PhD – what is that?  An Industrial PhD project: “…is an industrially focused PhD education. The research project is conducted in cooperation between a private company, an Industrial PhD student and a university. Third parties from both the public and private sector can be attached.” (Source: Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation)  The industrial PhD degree is as valid as the “ordinary” PhD degree  All three parties must apply for a grant at the national authority  The company holds all the expenses, but get subsidy from the national authority  The requirements for an industrial PhD student is the same as for an “ordinary” PhD student  An industrial PhD student is employed in the company and is matriculate at the university as PhD student at the same time – the time is split between the company and the university

An industrial PhD – what’s in it?  What we get out of it?  Research  Teaching  Knowledge  Network  The title of the industrial PhD in Danish Standards  “Standardization and innovation - A strategic perspective on Danish companies and industries in an international context”
