Climate Change Adaptation What is climate change adaptation? Adjustment in natural or human systems to a new or changing environment that exploits beneficial opportunities or moderates negative effects

The Adaptation Process

UNFCCC Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Adaptation Funds Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) Strategic Priority for Adaptation (SPA)

Bonizella Biagini, Rosina Bierbaum, Missy Stults, Saliha Dobardzic, Shannon M. McNeeley A typology of adaptation actions: A global look at climate adaptation actions financed through the Global Environment Facility Global Environmental Change, Volume 25, 2014, 97 – (OPEN ACCESS) Climate Adaptation Action Typology

Analysis Document analysis (grounded theory) – Coding – Families – Draft Typology Literature review Phone/Skype interviews Online Surveys

Conclusions First compendium of adaptation actions financed through three Global Environment Facility funds. 10 types of 158 adaptation activities were identified through an analysis of 92 projects in 70 countries. Results show that early ideas of climate adaptation theoreticians are consistent with results from the field. This typology serves to provide insight into what exactly adaptation is in practical terms. The typology is a beginning for furthering harmonization between theory and practice.
