1 LDCF/SCCF Climate Change Adaptation Strategy
Expanded Constituency Workshop July 6 - 8 Dakar, Senegal

2 LDCF/SCCF Adaptation Strategy 2010-2014
Adaptation is the process of reducing the adverse effects of climate change on human and natural systems. It refers to the efforts made to cope with actual change as well as the process of adjusting to expected change. Goal: To support developing countries to increase resilience to climate change through both immediate and longer-term adaptation measures in development policies, plans, programs, projects and actions. Impact: Reduce absolute losses due to climate change, including variability. 2 2

3 LDCF and SCCF Strategic Objectives
Reduce vulnerability to the adverse impacts of climate change – e.g. reduced risks to economic losses through implementation of adaptation measures

4 LDCF and SCCF Strategic Objectives
2. Increase adaptive capacity to respond to the impacts of climate change – e.g. within relevant development sectors and natural resources; diversified and strengthened livelihoods and sources of income

5 LDCF and SCCF Strategic Objectives
3. Promote transfer and adoption of adaptation technologies – as defined under the Climate Convention (example: SCCF-TT Jordan)

6 Looking forward: programming under the LDCF and the SCCF
Most vulnerable sectors targeted: agriculture, food security, and water resources management – all highly relevant for efforts to curb land degradation. Through multi-trust fund, programmatic approaches, the LDCF and the SCCF promote synergies with other GEF focal areas, not least with land degradation.

7 Looking forward: programming under the LDCF and the SCCF
Scaling up adaptation through: robust and predictable financing of the LDCF and the SCCF programmatic approaches Responding to Convention guidance, developing country needs and independent evaluations

8 Innovative Features of LDCF/SCCF
GEF TRUST FUND: Incremental cost Global benefits STAR Co-financing LDCF & SCCF: Additional cost NO Global benefits requirement No STAR Existing BAU Financing Higher MSP ceiling for LDCF Rolling basis approval for LDCF => Not repeating the scientific evidence and economics …. Seek advice on timeframe, modalities, possible size of voluntary contributions, etc. Quote language from COP12 asking the GEF to finance adaptation
