In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…

“We are indebted to half of the world before we finish breakfast.” - Martin Luther King

In the UK we each spend £50 a year on chocolate. Most cocoa farmers in Ghana earn £50 a year and have never tasted it.

We share a world where the consumption of the wealthiest directly affects the life and death of the poorest.

Poor water supply and inadequate sanitation are the world’s biggest killers: there are 250 million cases of water borne diseases per year, leading to 2.2 million deaths.

Many people endure low pay, an unsafe working environment and poor living conditions. Too often they lack the freedom to join a trade union to defend their rights and the opportunity to participate in decisions that affect their lives.

For the average jar of instant coffee, the farmer only receives 11p of the price you pay in the shops.

But can YOU change anything? Ever dreamt about a fairer world… But can YOU change anything?

Yes! BUY FAIRTRADE!

Long term contracts which provide real security What is Fairtrade? A growing international movement which ensures that producers get: Fair price for their goods (that covers the cost of production and guarantees a living income) Long term contracts which provide real security Support to gain the knowledge and skills they need to develop their businesses and increase sales

That’s why we believe the government should be doing more – not less – to save lives through the provision of safe water and basic sanitation.

Benefits of Fairtrade for the farmer: Regular income Fair pay and working conditions Cleaner environment New housing Improved health and sanitation Increased efficiency

Fair trade bananas ensure that the worker receives 15p. Only 3p of the price of bananas in a normal supermarket actually goes to the worker. Fair trade bananas ensure that the worker receives 15p.

Benefits for you? You are actually doing something to change this situation Lots of different foods from different countries Raises awareness of fairtrade Tastes pretty good too!

What difference does it really make?

“I have been able to fix the roof of my house, there is money for food and I can buy new shoes if I want to…but the most important contribution of Fairtrade is that our dignity as human beings is recovered.”

“It’s not often you get the chance to be part of something that might actually change the world” - BONO

And remember….. “If you think you are too small to be effective, you’ve never been in bed with a mosquito!”

The Ethical Trade Society BUY FAIRTRADE! Thank you for listening The Ethical Trade Society
