WELCOME TO OUR FAIRTRADE ASSEMBLY

“In the morning we drink coffee provided for us by a South American,or tea by a Chinese, or cocoa by a West African. Before we leave for our jobs we’re already indebted to more than half the world.” A quote by Martin Luther King

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT TRADE?  Do you think these statements about trade are true or false? Unfortunately they are all true!

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE CHOCOLATE TRADE? Life is tough for cocoa farmers. The price of cocoa beans has slumped in recent years despite high demand. Disease and age are damaging cocoa trees and few young people are becoming cocoa farmers because of the poor prospects. How does a chocolate bar reach us?

Buying Fairtrade chocolate makes a huge difference to the lives of cocoa farmers and their families around the world. With Fairtrade you have the power to change the world every day. With one simple choice you can get farmers a better deal. And that means they can make their own choices, control their futures and lead the respectful life everyone deserves. But how does a bar of chocolate reach us?

HOW MUCH SHOULD EACH PERSON GET? Consumer Pays £1 Chocolate Company 40p Tax Collector 25p Shopkeeper 28p Cocoa Farmer 7p

WHAT PROBLEMS DO COCOA FARMER’S FACE? The Dark Side of Chocolate..

IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE? Fairtrade is about better prices, good working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. You can recognise Fairtrade items because of the Fairtrade Mark!

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES FAIR TRADE MAKE?

WHAT CAN WE DO?  We can make a real difference to the lives of producers by buying Fairtrade products! They may cost us a few pence more but we know the extra goes to the people who really need it!  Your choices matter – an average 16 year old in Britain will spend a MILLION pounds in their lifetime! Think about the difference you can make!  Look out for the Fairtrade Mark so that we can put smiles back on faces!
