When you go shopping what factors influence your decision to buy? Why? Price Brand Name Picture of Person Quality Availability

5 The Facts Increasingly consumers want to know more about who makes the products they buy. Whether the products are environmentally friendly? What conditions are like for workers who make the product? What the manufacturers reputation is like – do they for example, use child labour, or are their products tested on animals? Is the packaging they use recyclable? Have any genetically modified (GM) additives or preservatives been used?

6 The Facts In the past few years there has been a rapid growth in the demand for organic food. As the world becomes smaller as a result of technological advances and consumers are made more aware of the conditions in which products are made, consumers in industrialised (rich) countries are developing a conscience and are demanding higher standards, fair trade agreements and ethical trading policies to support developing countries. Helping them to help themselves!

11 Often it is the people far away who grow foods, such as cocoa beans for your bar of chocolate, who are the ones who get the worst deal from what you buy. Instead, it is the big international companies and advertising agencies who take most of the profits

15 Literacy……Key Words Fair Trade – a trading system that makes sure that people who grow or make the product get a fair price for their work. Ethical Trading – a system were companies have agreed rules about their trading practices. This includes how they treat their workers, making sure the environment is protected and their workers respected. It puts human need before greed and profit.

Primark changed their buying choices based on consumer boycotting Discuss in groups and pairs: back up your opinions Would anyone consider boycotting (not buying) goods from a store that exploited the Third World? now? Should the Government force these large Multi-National Companies to trade in a more responsible and ethical way? What would you do if you were the Prime Minister?

21 Questions Why do you think it is important for companies to have an ethical and fair trading policy? What do you think needs to be done so that you know more about the goods you are buying? What would cause you to boycott stores and goods? How can you as a consumer apply pressure on a large multi-national company?
