Matthew 28:18-20

Philip, the Evangelist One of the seven chosen in Acts 6 Went to Samaria and preached the gospel –Acts 8:4-13 –Samaritans are half Jew and half Gentile –Jews had no association with the Samaritans

Philip’s Sermon Preached Christ to the Samaritans –They believed in the Pentateuch –First 5 books of the Old Testament Promised all nations would be blessed –Knew that Moses foretold of another Prophet Deuteronomy 18:15-17 –Lived in anticipation of the coming Messiah When Philip preached Christ – he preached to these people that the Messiah had come!

Philip’s Sermon Preached the things concerning the kingdom of God –Coming kingdom was tied to the coming Messiah Isaiah 2:1-4; Daniel 2:44 –Jesus announced the kingdom was at hand Mark 1:15 Kingdom identified with the church (Matthew 16:18) Enter the kingdom by being born of water and spirit (John 3:5) Citizens of the kingdom (Colossians 1:13-14) Philip preached the kingdom had been established!

Philip’s Sermon Preached the name of Jesus –Identified the promised Messiah with the man Jesus of Nazareth –No doubt preached of His death, burial and resurrection – His blood being shed for sins –He was raised from the dead and ascended to heaven (Ephesians 1:18-23) –Jesus then sent His disciples on the Great Commission (Mark 16:15-16)

Philip’s Sermon Was confirmed and authenticated by God through the miracles Philip performed –Cast out demons and healed the lame Acts 8:7 –Miracles would accompany the gospel Mark 16:17-20 –God endorsed his message by miracles done All miracles done instantly and completely Those performing miracles never claimed to be “Great” Modern day “healings” have no purpose

Conditions for Forgiveness What the Samaritans did: (Acts 8:12-13) –Heard the gospel (Acts 8:6) –Believed what Philip preached (Acts 8:12) –Turned from false religion Rejected Simon’s teaching and turned to the gospel –They were baptized (Acts 8:12; Mark 16:16) These SAME conditions apply to ALL individuals today!
