Electromagnetic Spectrum

Electromagnetic Wave – a wave that can travel through empty space and through matter. Energy carried by an electromagnetic wave is called electromagnetic radiation.

Think Pair Share Why is the electromagnetic spectrum important to me?

Why is the electromagnetic spectrum important to me?

Wavelength – distance between one point on a wave to the nearest point just like it. Frequency – the number of wavelengths that pass by a point in a certain period of time.

As frequency decreases, wavelength increases.

Sources of Electromagnetic Waves The sun emits energy by giving off electromagnetic waves (ultraviolet waves, light waves, and infrared waves. Telescopes capture radiation emitted by stars and planets. Hot objects like stoves, light bulbs, and campfires emit radiation.
