Lessons 5 & 6 Notes

Lesson 5 vocabulary Prism – this object bends white light and splits it into separate colors Refract – the bending of light (like through a prism) Visible spectrum – the colors we see when white light is split

Lesson 5 White light is composed of all of the colors in the visible spectrum A rainbow is produced when sunlight refracts through a raindrop

Lesson 6 vocabulary Ultraviolet (UV) – invisible radiation from the Sun; can cause sunburn or skin cancer; wavelengths shorter than violet light Infrared – invisible radiation with wavelengths shorter than red light

Lesson 6 Waves carry energy
Most electromagnetic waves are invisible – the only part of the electromagnetic spectrum we can see is the visible spectrum (light and colors)

What are the parts of a wave?
Crest – the highest point of a wave Trough – the lowest point of a wave Wavelength – the distance between two crests or two troughs Amplitude – the height of a wave

Frequency Waves with short wavelengths have high frequencies and carry more energy
