Animal Habitats

Habitat Definition The region where a plant or animal naturally lives.

Four Habitat Components Food Water Shelter Space

Food What does this animal eat? Where does the animal find the food? Does it eat meat only? Does it eat plants only? Does it eat both meat and plants? Where does the animal find the food?

Water Where does the animal find water? Does the animal drink from lakes or streams? Does the animal get water from the food it eats, such as fruits? Can the animal live for many days without drinking water?

Shelter Where does the animal live? Does the animal burrow a hole in the ground and use this for shelter? Does the animal live in a hole in a tree?

Space How much area does the animal need in order to live? The space needs to be big enough to allow the animal to find plenty of food, water and shelter, as well as mates. Does an ant need as much space as a mountain lion?
