God’s Covenant with Abraham Genesis 12:1-3 Abraham’s response was to strike out in Faith Slides: 1, 18, 22 Preached: West Side church of Christ, October 14, 2007 PM

Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you. 2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Genesis 12:5; 15:6 (12:5), Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. (15:6), And he believed in the LORD, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

God’s Covenant With Abraham The Land Promise (12:1; 17:7-8)

Genesis 12:1; 17:7-8 Now the LORD had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you. (17:7-8), (25 years later), And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you. 8 Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God."

God’s Covenant With Abraham The Land Promise (12:1; 17:7-8) Fulfilled: 12:5-7; Joshua 21:43-45; Nehemiah 9:6-8

Genesis 12:5-7 Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. 6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land. 7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

Joshua 21:43-45 So the LORD gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it. 44 The LORD gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand. 45 Not a word failed of any good thing which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.

Nehemiah 9:6-8 You alone are the LORD; You have made heaven, The heaven of heavens, with all their host, The earth and everything on it, The seas and all that is in them, And You preserve them all. The host of heaven worships You. 7 "You are the LORD God, Who chose Abram, And brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans, And gave him the name Abraham; 8 You found his heart faithful before You, And made a covenant with him To give the land of the Canaanites, The Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, And the Girgashites-To give it to his descendants. You have performed Your words, For You are righteous.

God’s Covenant With Abraham The Land Promise (12:1; 17:7-8) Fulfilled: 12:5-7; Joshua 21:43-45; Nehemiah 9:6-8 The Nation Promise (12:2)

Genesis 12:2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.

God’s Covenant With Abraham The Land Promise (12:1; 17:7-8) Fulfilled: 12:5-7; Joshua 21:43-45; Nehemiah 9:6-8 The Nation Promise (12:2) Fulfilled: Exodus 1:7-10 Secular history establishes the Kingdom of Israel

Exodus 1:7-10 But the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them. 8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people, "Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we; 10 "come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land."

God’s Covenant With Abraham The Land Promise (12:1; 17:7-8) Fulfilled: 12:5-7; Joshua 21:43-45; Nehemiah 9:6-8 The Nation Promise (12:2) Fulfilled: Exodus 1:7-10 Secular history establishes the Kingdom of Israel The Seed Promise (12:3)

Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

God’s Covenant With Abraham The Land Promise (12:1; 17:7-8) Fulfilled: 12:5-7; Joshua 21:43-45; Nehemiah 9:6-8 The Nation Promise (12:2) Fulfilled: Exodus 1:7-10 Secular history establishes the Kingdom of Israel The Seed Promise (12:3) All Nations (Genesis 18:17-18)

Genesis 18:17-18 And the LORD said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, 18 "since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? Note: “Nations” (Heb. goyin: Gentiles)

God’s Covenant With Abraham The Land Promise (12:1; 17:7-8) Fulfilled: 12:5-7; Joshua 21:43-45; Nehemiah 9:6-8 The Nation Promise (12:2) Fulfilled: Exodus 1:7-10 Secular history establishes the Kingdom of Israel The Seed Promise (12:3) All Nations (Genesis 18:17-18) Through Christ (1 Cor. 15:4; Gal. 3:16-18; 26-28)

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.

Galatians 3:16-18 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is Christ. 17 And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. 18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Galatians 3:26-28 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Conclusion As Christians, we are God’s Holy Nation … We are the People of Promise (the Spiritual Jew) 1 Peter 2:9-10 Romans 2:28-29

1 Peter 2:9-10 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

Romans 2:28-29 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; 29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God. Today: We, as Christians are the people of God. All of God’s promises to Abraham have been fulfilled!
