NEWYORKCITY NEW YORK CITY

NEWYORKCITY NYC is one of the largest cities in the USA and one of the greatest cities in the world. It is an important seaport. New York City is the industrial, cultural, financial and business centre of the USA. It is also the centre of trade, art, mass media, theatre and fashion.

In 1626, the Dutch bought the Island of Manhattan from Native Americans for goods valued at about $24. History

From 1776 to 1783, there was the War of Independence in which American colonists fought for independence from the British rule. In 1789, NYC became the capital of the USA for 4 years and the 1st US President George Washington was inaugurated there.

general information New York City has a significant impact on global business, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education and entertainment. NYC is the seat of the United Nations Headquarters. NYC is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. Around 170 different languages are spoken there, and more than 35 per cent of the city’s population were born outside the USA.

People often call NYC „The Big Apple“. I In 1920s jazz musicians all wanted to work in NYC and they used to say: „There are a lot of apples on the tree, but when you take New York City, you take the BIG APPLE!“

The statue was a gift from France to the USA in 1886 to commemorate the 100th anniversary = the beginning of freedom and the END of SLAVERY after the Civil War. There are 300 stairs to the top. There is a museum at the foot of the statue. NEWYORKCITY The Statue of Liberty is on the Liberty Island. It holds a torch in the right hand and a book in the left. The statue is 93m high. It is a symbol of FREEDOM & DEMOCRACY.

In the morning of September 11th, 2001 terrorists hijacked 3 planes and flew 2 of them into the twin buildings of The World Trade Centre (WTC) in New York City. The twin buildings of WTC collapsed totally within 2 hours. Nearly 3,000 people died there. In response to the attacks, the USA started The War on Terrorism in Afghanistan.

Ground Zero Ground Zero is being transformed into a permanent World Trade Center Memorial Site entitled Reflecting Absence, as well as a functional major office and visitor building called the Freedom Tower. NEWYORKCITY

Chinatown It is a unique ethnic part of NYC. It was founded in the 1870s by the Chinese immigrants. There are hundreds of authentic Chinese restaurants, many shops selling unique Asian art and crafts. There are restaurants which also serve other Asian food: Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese and Malaysian. Times Square Times Square is the most busy part of NYC. It is well-known for its many Broadway theatres, cinemas and great shows. It is one of the reasons why people call NYC „the city which never sleeps“.
