SAM for Cloud Readiness Presenter Name

Today’s technology trends are sparking opportunity Modern organizational needs are changing. 70 percent of CIOs will embrace a cloud-first strategy in 2016. Today’s technology trends are sparking opportunity “I need my company to be able to quickly bring new services to market.” “The projects I plan must drive new market opportunities, scale rapidly to meet business demand, and be cost effective.” “I need to ensure sensitive data is protected and that we derive maximum value from our technology investments.”

A cloud strategy addresses these needs Reduced Cost Reduce total cost of operations Increased Agility Rapidly deliver new services to the business Improved Scalability Instantly respond to surges in demand without wasted idle resources

 Cloud scenarios SaaS PaaS IaaS Visibility to end users Software as a service (SaaS): This is perhaps the most familiar service-delivery model. Enterprises subscribe to prepackaged applications that run on a cloud infrastructure and that allow access from a variety of devices. Enterprises rarely are responsible for administration, beyond limited configuration and data-quality management. (Office 365, Dynamics CRM, Yammer) Platform as a service (PaaS): Enterprises use PaaS to develop, deploy, monitor, and maintain applications, while the cloud provider manages everything else. Developers can manage configuration remotely, as with IaaS, but they do not have to configure the virtual machine’s image directly. (Microsoft Azure, Windows Server, and Microsoft System Center) Infrastructure as a service (IaaS): IT departments typically use IaaS to run client and server applications on virtual machines. The vendor manages the network, servers, and storage resources so that IT managers no longer need to buy, track, or decommission hardware. However, IT managers must continue to manage operating systems, databases, and applications. Key first step in moving to the cloud You first need to know what software you already have rights to, starting with a comprehensive application inventory. Based upon this, you can: Develop your adoption strategy Identify required characteristics of remaining applications Prioritize and identify candidates for the cloud Key first step in moving to the cloud Adopting SAM principles eases the application inventory process, identifying license and usage patterns.

What is Software Asset Management (SAM)? 4/19/2017 What is Software Asset Management (SAM)? SAM is a global industry standard ISO/IEC 19770-1 Endorsed by Microsoft and many others ITIL best practice guide on SAM “All of the infrastructure and processes necessary for the effective management, control and protection of the software assets within an organization, throughout all stages of their lifecycle” SAM is an integral part of the control framework of any well-run organization Following SAM best practices results in better information for decision making and a higher degree of operational excellence; ultimately driving long-term business value.

SAM supports cloud readiness Process discipline helps reduce corporate risk Ease of purchasing and deploying cloud services can lead organizations to unanticipated results: SAM supports cloud readiness Over-provisioning can occur when users receive services they don’t want or need. Under-licensing can occur when services are added or consumed but not accounted for in a centralized way. A mix of on-premises and cloud solutions can cause confusion; not all on-premises solutions have cloud options available. SAM best practices can facilitate cloud adoption by providing the systems, processes, and management structure so organizations can make the right strategic decisions to achieve their long-term cloud goals.

Cloud-Readiness SAM Engagement 4/19/2017 Cloud-Readiness SAM Engagement A customer focused SAM engagement will help you: Save money and gain efficiencies Understand cloud options Manage risks Optimally transition to the cloud

Cloud-Readiness Engagement: Step 1 After establishing an organization’s goals and objectives, the first step is to complete a software review… Inventory deployed software Match installations with licenses ...build a detailed report on your current state

Cloud-Readiness Engagement: Step 2 Compare your current environment with your organization’s future goals and objectives Review deployment considerations Consider licensing implications Can potential gaps be resolved in the cloud? What are key business and technical requirements ? How do cloud SKUs map to future requirements? How would subscription models impact budgets? Is on-premises, cloud, or hybrid the best structure? What are Volume Licensing options? ...use the new insight to help decide right path for the future

Office 365 Requirements Before making the decision to move to Office 365, we recommend that you verify that systems meet or exceed minimum system requirements: For the best experience, Office 365 is designed to work with the following software: - Current or immediately previous version of Microsoft Internet Explorer or Firefox, or the latest version of Chrome or Safari. - All versions of Microsoft Office covered by Microsoft mainstream support. Office 365 does not have an operating system requirement, except that the operating system used must be supported by its manufacturer. However, there might be advanced Office 365 configuration options, features, scenarios, or tools that have explicit dependencies on an operating system or behave differently on different operating systems. The Microsoft Service Pack Support Lifecycle Policy requires customers to install Office service packs within 12 months of release. Office 365 requires compliance with this policy. Office 365 strongly recommends that customers accept automatic updates from Microsoft to help secure their environments and to have the best experience with Office 365. The minimum hardware requirement for Office 365 is Single-core, 1 gigahertz (GHz), 1GB RAM, 50MB Disk Space. The recommended requirement is Quad-core, 2 GHz , 4GB RAM, 100 MB Disk Space.

Best practices for cloud readiness Fully define your goals. Organize around long-term organizational objectives. Build internal alignment. Management, IT, Procurement, and other stakeholders all play a part in creating an environment for success. Avoid surprises. Increase awareness of all impacts of cloud adoption, including changes to licensing and budgeting. Take control. Ensure needed processes are in place internally.

The Path Forward Inventory Project scoping & technical meeting Now Plan Discover Assess Where do opportunities exist? Review Are there any licensing issues to discuss? Discuss program & next steps Project scoping & technical meeting Inventory Collect data on software deployments and gather additional information on the IT environment What is the optimal path to the cloud? Organizational Objectives Understand the organization’s culture, and business goals and objectives they hope to achieve Policies Licensing Deployment Review & Validate Compare reports with current license entitlements and make final adjustments Current state Future goals

Benefits of a strong SAM process 4/19/2017 Benefits of a strong SAM process Enterprise Products Additional Products Non EA Licenses PCs / Users Servers / CALs Devices A strong SAM process helps control all licensing across the hardware life cycle Complex IT environments and licensing options drive risk of license mismanagement Keys to SAM Success Take Inventory: Find out what you already have. Get Organized: organize all your software licenses and documentation. Create Policies & Procedures: Establish standards and guidelines for all phases of the hardware and software lifecycles Maintain your SAM Plan: Keep your plan current through regular spot checks, inventories, and employee training.
