Domain Names 2 Domain names are used to identify one or more IP addresses ( ). For example, the domain name niu.com.mt represents that IP address. Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular Web pages. Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to, example:.com,.edu,.net,.com.mt,.fr

Domain Name Service - DNS An Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name might translate to

To register a.mt domain – 4

Web Hosting Service A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation or Housing as it is commonly called in Latin America or France. 5

In brief... 6

So what are the steps involved? Buy a domain name ( Buy a server or server space with at least 1 IP address (you can even find a company that can rent a small space on their server) Point the domain to that IP Address Set up the domain on the server Wait for the domain to propagate Set up an FTP and Upload Files 7

File Transfer Protocol - FTP File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to transfer files from one host to another over a network, such as the Internet. FTP is built on a client- server architecture and utilizes separate control and data connections between the client and server. 8

Content Management System – CMS (1) A content management system (CMS) is a system used to manage the content of a Web site. Typically, a CMS consists of two elements: the content management application (CMA) and the content delivery application (CDA). The CMA element allows the content manager or author, who may not know Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), to manage the creation, modification, and removal of content from a Web site without needing the expertise of a Webmaster. 9

Content Management System – CMS (2) The CDA element uses and compiles that information to update the Web site. The features of a CMS system vary, but most include Web-based publishing, format management, revision control, and indexing, search, and retrieval. 10

WordPress A very popular open source blog publishing program that is installed on the user's Web server. Introduced in 2003, WordPress is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database. Noted for its rich features, WordPress "Themes" provide numerous templates from which to choose a look and feel. In addition, the site can be enhanced with dialogs such as user registration, user feedback and password protection. WordPress also enables non-blog content to be included, and it imports other blog publishing formats. For more information, visit 11
