How to Boost Younger Membership

Main Points Current statistics Resources What is the Young Professionals Campaign? Membership Action Plan Identify Members Recruit Members Engage and Retain Members Build Membership Sustainability

But First – Interaction! Why did you join Rotary? How were you invited? What did you know before you joined? What is your testimonial? These questions can help us gauge why a member would want to join, what they know, what they think they know, and what we want them to know – most importantly, what OUR CLUB story is.

Lack of Membership Sustainability Rotarians under age 40 make up less than 10% of membership (Rotary International statistics ) There's no current strategy to lead Interact members to becoming Roteract members to becoming Rotary members More than 90% of millennials want their career to reflect “doing good” in the world (Kelly Global Workforce Index survey )

Rotary Offers Resources Membership Development Resource Guide Membership Growth and Retention Support for Clubs Club Membership Committee Manual Start with Rotary cards Understanding Young Professionals webinar What's Rotary Card (or proposed club flier) Light Up Rotary Day campaign

Young Professionals Campaign Recruiting 25 – 40 year old members Social Media and Service Projects  Twitter, Facebook, Vine, Vimeo, Instagram, Blogs  Experience Rotary outside of club meetings Non-members find Rotary uninviting, lacking appeal, out-of-date, and out-of-touch YPs have same interests as older members – just have a different approach

What Do YPs Want? Challenging Tasks Flexible Scheduling Family-Friendly Planning and Events “Untethered” and Modern Ways to Organize Mentors

Important Goals: District 9210 Rotary International Membership Goals

Developing a Membership Action Plan Understanding Young Professionals Webinar – Rotary 2014

Identifying Potential Club Members Qualified potential members are either  Currently working in professional, proprietary, executive, or managerial positions or retired from such positions  Community leaders who have demonstrated a commitmentto service through personal involvement in community affairs  Rotary Foundation alumni, as defined by the RI Board They must also  Be able to meet the club’s weekly attendance and community project participation requirements  Live or work within the club’s area  Fit into a classification that is not overrepresented in your club (exception: Rotary Foundation alumni)

Recruit Potential Club Members Open social events  Rotary member presentation with topic relating to younger members  Can drive or other easy fundraiser at event  Information capture and invite to future meeting  Interactive with social media – tweets and pictures  Media-worthy!

Engage and Retain New Members District 9210 Rotary International Membership Goals

Build Membership Sustainability Developing Meaningful Induction Ceremonies Involving New Members in Meaningful Service Projects Informing and Orienting Your New Member Using New Member Information Kits Communicating Electronically Educating and Nurturing Existing Members Direct to Interact > Roteract > Rotary Pipeline

So What Are Our First Steps? Assess our current membership Create preliminary list of skills or occupations that aren't a part of our group Develop relationships with diverse community members that fit the needs of the group Invite potential members to a Rotary activity or event Follow up invitation for interested individuals to a club meeting Club decides to invite potential to become a member Have new members recruit friends, family, and peers Repeat!

Club Self-Assessment Understanding Young Professionals Webinar – Rotary 2014

Community Focus Group Rotary has a step-by-step guide to host a community focus group to gauge non- members perception of Rotary in the community This may help us gauge interest and knowledge about our 3 city clubs and how to move forward with recruitment of new members

Conversation Let's discuss how we want to proceed! Thank you and have a wonderful day!
