H ISTORY Started as a dream of Rev. John Flynn of the Presbyterian Church. First base opened in Queensland on the 15 th of May 1928 Original name was Australian Inland Mission Aerial Medical Service They did not own their own planes until the 1960s In 1942, A.A.M.S. became "The Flying Doctor Service."

R OYAL F LYING D OCTOR B ASES Victoria First base opened 1935 in Wyndam New South Wales Became operational in 1937 South Australia and Northern Territory Alice Springs 1939 Goldfields Western Australia The Eastern half officially opened in 1937, however service dates back to Rest of Western Australia Port Hedland became operative on October 10, 1936 and the first medical flight was made on the opening day. Queensland Queensland Section was not registered in its own right until The Cloncurry base remained operational until 1964 when it was relocated to Mt Isa Tasmania July 1960, although emergency medical flights were operated in Tasmania long before that, going back to the 1930s.

RFDS T ODAY Today they have a fleet of 53 aircrafts that have the latest navigational technology There are 21 bases that are located all over Australia Their pilots fly the equivalent of 25 round trips to the moon and back in one year. I NDIGENOUS H ISTORY Djabugay “Daj-bu-guy” aboriginal people have lived here for over 10,000 years European explorers came for the gold prospects and timber industry in the early 1800s In 1888 the building of roads and railway began. This paved the way for trade and the movement of people over the mountains. In the mid 1890s an infamous massacre, known as the Speewah massacre occurred due to the constriction of the roads and railways in the area. The population of the “Bama” (rainforest) people in the Cairns area was estimated at between 4000 and 5000, but by the turn of the century their numbers had rapidly declined, overtaken by the “Gadja” (ghost spirit), or white man settlers.
