I NDIGENOUS H ISTORY Djabugay “Daj-bu-guy” aboriginal people have lived here for over 10,000 years European explorers came for the gold prospects and timber industry in the early 1800s In 1888 the building of roads and railway began. This paved the way for trade and the movement of people over the mountains. In the mid 1890s an infamous massacre, known as the Speewah massacre occurred due to the constriction of the roads and railways in the area. The population of the “Bama” (rainforest) people in the Cairns area was estimated at between 4000 and 5000, but by the turn of the century their numbers had rapidly declined, overtaken by the “Gadja” (ghost spirit), or white man settlers.
