Impact to Business  The cost of storage acquisition is decreasing, while the ongoing management costs of unstructured file data are increasing. Data must be stored for longer periods, often forever. Backup becomes more difficult as the amount of data increases. Backup windows are shrinking, as data is used 24x7x365. Data is distributed across the enterprise, making management difficult.  Data stored for long periods creates risk during litigation. All data is admissible, therefore policies should include what data to keep and what data to expire and delete. Not retaining proper data is expensive: Many cases have been lost due to deleted or lost data.
