At a football game between NC State and UNC, NC State wins the coin toss on the first half and chooses to be offensive. A NC State player of the receiving team catches the first kickoff ball at the 32 yard line, which becomes the line of scrimmage. At the first down, the quarterback throws the football to his wide receiver and gains 24 yards. In the next play, first down still, instead of throwing the football, the quarterback passes the ball to a runner and the runner only advances 6 yards. In the next play, 2 nd down, the quarterback is tackled by a defensive linebacker, and loses 20 yards. In the next play, 3 rd down, the quarterback cannot pass the football to anybody. He intentionally downs the ball, and loses another 2 yards. What is the total amount of yards gained or lost, from the original line of scrimmage (at 32 yards line)? At what yard line is the football? Line of scrimmage Expression: (20) + - (12) Solve: = -2 The total amount of yards lost from the original line of scrimmage is 2. The football is at the 30 yard line (32 – 2 = 30). TIP:

Bobby is organizing a “Pay It Forward” event at his school. Anybody can participate in this event. Every week, each person only needs to do two acts of kindness on two different people. Those two people will continue the process with other people. The act of kindness can be anything done at school or at home. It can be helping carrying groceries, tidying up your room, tutoring classmates, etc…. Bobby creates a leafless tree in the main hallway of his school. Each person that participates in the “Pay It Forward” event, will put a leaf on the tree after he/she does the act of kindness. One leaf per act of kindness. Starting with Bobby, 1 person, at the end of 10 weeks, how many leaves will be on the tree? Week 1 /\ 2¹ = 2 x 1 = 2 leaves Week 2 /\ /\ 2² = 2 x 2 = 4 leaves Week 3 /\/\/\/\ 2³ = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 leaves ……… Week 10 ……………… 2¹⁰ = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 1024 leaves Expression : 2¹⁰ = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 1024 Solve : At the end of 10 weeks, there will be 1024 leaves on the “Pay It Forward” tree.
