Literacy RWI groups will continue this half term, with your child being placed in a group appropriate to their level. Children will be bringing home a RWI book to read with you- this must come back into school every day. We will be continuing guided reading carousels to ensure your child is reading with the teacher at least once every week, as well as developing their independent working skills and hand-writing. We will be looking at and writing our own information texts to link to our topic on pets. Science Linking to our topic, our science module this half term is: animals! We will be covering the following learning objectives in our lessons: - to name and sort different types of animals. -to identify characteristics of mammals, reptiles, fish, birds and amphibians. -to learn about the diets of carnivores and herbivores -to compare and contrast different animals with each other and with humans. -to understand the lifecycle of a frog. Topic In our topic lessons we will be learning all about pet animals! We will cover the following things in our sessions: 1.Our own pets. 2.Pets today and in history. 3.Know about pets’ needs and the 5 freedoms of the RSPCA. 4.Caring for a pet. 5.The role of the PDSA and the Blue Cross. 6.Looking after sick pets and the role of the vet. 7.Learn about a visiting animal. 8.Create information posters about caring for both common and exotic pets. 9.Identify where in the world pets come from originally. 10. Music This half term our Music express module is “Rain, Rain- go away”- exploring timbre tempo and dynamics. This unit develops children’s ability to recognise how sounds and instruments can be used expressively and can be combined to create music in response to a stimulus. We will continue to listen to calming pieces of classical music at various times throughout the school day. RRS Article 31: You have the right to experience a wide range of cultural activities. Art/DT We will use art techniques to make line drawings of pets. We will create puppets of cats and dogs to use in puppet shows. PE/Games In indoor PE we are continuing our dance module where we are using the story of Room on a Broom as inspiration for our dance. Mr Garner will be taking outdoor games. Skills children will concentrate on are: -mastering basic movements, including turning, running and throwing. -develop balance, agility and co-ordination. -participate in team games and develop basic tactics for attacking and defending. RE Topics that Year One will be looking at in the Summer term include: 1.The Church 2.Religious symbols. THE FRIENDLY DRAGON’S DIARY During the Summer Term your child will have the opportunity to bring home our very own Friendly Dragon and his diary! Encourage your child to write all about their adventures with our Dragon into his diary- this is a lovely opportunity for some shared imaginative writing (their adventure doesn’t have to be real!) Your child will get to tell the rest of the class all about it when they come back into school! The Friendly Dragon is looking forward to coming home with you, but he wants to stay with as many children as possible! Please remember to send him back to school with your son or daughter so the next child can have their turn. If your child brings him home on a MONDAY please return him on WEDNESDAY; if your child brings him home on WEDNESDAY please return him on FRIDAY, and if your child brings him home on FRIDAY, please return him for MONDAY.
