1. Year 2 Autumn
Literacy
We will start the term by looking at stories with familiar settings. Read, Write, Inc. will begin as soon as we are all organised into our groups. We may also look at some classic picture books and learn to write Explanation texts and diaries. Each day we will practise our handwriting; learning to use a cursive style for our letters. We will also regularly learn spellings and read with an adult. On Fridays we will do Big Writing. Look out for the Talk Homework which explains what we will be doing each week!

3. Maths This half term we will be;
Estimating and counting objects up to 100, locating numbers on number lines and squares, comparing and ordering 2-digit numbers
Revising number bonds to 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 and learning the related subtraction facts and deriving number bonds to 20 and 100
Doubling numbers up to 15, using patterns to solve more difficult additions and bridging 10 to solve additions
Sorting 2D shapes according to symmetry using Venn diagrams, identifying right angles and recognising and sorting 2D shapes that tessellate using Carroll diagrams
Marking numbers on a landmarked number line, comparing and ordering numbers using < and > and using the 100 squares to find 1 and 10 more or less than a number

4. Science
In Science this half term we will be learning about materials and their everyday uses. We will find out about the suitability of different materials for different objects and then investigate how we can bend, stretch, squash, twist and change different materials.

5. Unit: We are astronauts Programming on screen

In this unit the children will be writing simple computer programs to guide their spaceship around the universe. They will identify and fix errors (debug) in programs and predict what a simple program will do.

6. History
This half term we will be learning about The Great Fire of London. We will learn about Samuel Pepys and how he wrote about the fire in his diary. We will look at how the fire started, the damage it did and how London was rebuilt afterwards. We will also compare the houses and streets of London and see how they have changed over time.

7. Music
This half term our Music will focus on exploring sounds. We will make links with our science topic and explore how different objects and materials can make different sounds. We will listen to music and identify sounds, compose our own pieces and perform our own ensembles.

Art/DT
This half term we will be designing and making musical instruments using a range of different materials and techniques. We will also look at the work of famous artists who depicted the Great Fire of London and use a range of techniques in colour, texture and form to create our own art work based on this life-changing event.

8. PE/Games

PSHE/RRS
In PSHE this half term we will look at New Beginnings; setting up our Class Charter and deciding on our rules, rewards and responsibilities. We will talk about how to make someone feel welcome, doing something brave, solving problems and helping others and ourselves to calm down.

9. RE
This half term we will be looking at important people such as Mohammed, Guru Nanak, Moses, Jesus and Ganesha. We will also learn about Divali; the Sikh and Hindu festival of lights, from the story of Rama and Sita to how the festival is celebrated each year here in Britain.

PE days are Tuesday (outdoor) and Friday (indoor). Please make sure you have the correct kit, labeled and in school all week. Earrings must be removed for PE, and long hair tied back.
