WHAT’S CINEMA? 3. He put these pictures in sequential order. 13

HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE? 14 LESSON 2 HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE?

When FRAMES are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring 15

LESSON 2 HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE? 18 Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011

What you have seen is an illusion of motion, but you can still see the flickering between frames LESSON 2 HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE? 19 Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011

LESSON 2 HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE? EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011

LESSON 2 HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE? The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision. That means the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source is removed.persistence of vision 21 Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011

LESSON 2 HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE? Is cinema what Eadweard Muydridge made? NO, it is not but This series of photos stands as one of the earliest forms of videography. 22

LESSON 2 HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE? Is cinema what Eadweard Muydridge made? NO, it is not It’s ANIMATION That’s the rapid display of a sequence of images 23

WHO INVENTED MOTION PICTURES? No one. No one can claim this achievement for himself LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES 40 Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011

Many scientists and inventors from 15 th to 19 th Century contributed to the success of motion pictures. They shared their knowledge. and So many inventions, motion toys and devices began to appear LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES 41

LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES MOST OF THESE DEVICES WERE VERY EASY TO USE ZOOTROPE 43 Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011

How does a zootrope work? By rotating. It rotates. The images give the illusion of movement as the drum is spun. LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES 44 Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011

The Kinetoscope is an early motion picture exhibition device projected by Thomas A. Edison and developed by his employee William Dickson between 1889 and 1892motion picture LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES 46 Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011

A meeting between Eadweard Muybridge and Thomas Edison inspired Edison to start developing a motion picture system. Eadweard Muybridge LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES 47 Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011

LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES The Kinetoscop was designed for films to be viewed individually. People looked through the window of a cabinet with its components inside. It creates the illusion of movement by showing a strip of perforated film with sequential images over a light source.perforated film 48 Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011

The film was 35mm.wide. It was made of celluloid. Each vertically sequenced frame had a rectangular image and four perforations on each side. This basic format was adopted globally as the standard for motion pictures film, and still remains. LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES 49
