 Content Area: African/African American Studies  Grade Level: 9-12  Summary: The purpose of this power point is to have the students understand what took place as slaves where bought and sold through the middle passage  Learning Objective: Given websites that contain facts about the middle passage students will need to interpret the material within the websites to answer the questions within the power point with 100 percent accuracy  Standard: AAH.4 Identify and explain the Middle Passage as one of the largest forced migrations in human history. (C, H)

Why did the trade begin?  Expanding European empires in the New World lacked one major resource -- a work force. In most cases the indigenous peoples had proved unreliable,and Europeans were unsuited to the climate and suffered under tropical diseases. Africans, on the other hand, were excellent workers: they often had experience of agriculture and keeping cattle, they were used to a tropical climate, resistant to tropical diseases, and they could be "worked very hard" on plantations or in mines.
