Adding and Subtracting Integers. RULE #1: Same Signs!! When you’re adding two numbers with the same sign, just ignore the signs! Add them like normal!
RATIONAL NUMBERS NATURAL NUMBERS {1, 2, 3,…}+ {0} = WHOLE NUMBERS {0, 1, 2, 3,…}+ NEG. WHOLE NOS. = INTEGERS {…-2, -1, 0, 1, 2,…}+ PURE FRACTIONS = RATIONAL.
Adding rational numbers Essential question: How can you add rational numbers? Unit 1-2.
 Two Rules: 1. To add numbers with the same sign, ADD the absolute values and the answer has the same sign as the original numbers.  EXAMPLE:

2.1 Integers & Absolute Value 2.2 Adding Integers

Vocabulary  Negative numbers: numbers less than zero.  Integers: all the whole numbers, zero, and all the negative whole numbers.  { …-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,…}  Zero is not positive or negative.  Absolute value: the distance away from zero on a number line.

 |3| = 3 the absolute value of a positive number is just that same number.  |-3| = 3 the absolute value of a negative number is its opposite.  EXAMPLES: Page 59: # 1-19

Adding Integers  Two Rules:  1. To add numbers with the same sign, ADD the absolute values and the answer has the same sign as the original numbers.  EXAMPLE: = 19  = -8

 2. To ADD numbers with different signs, SUBTRACT the absolutes values and the answer has the same sign as the number with the largest absolute value.  EXAMPLE: = = 4  = = -3  = 10 – 4 = -6
