Integers Students will be able to add and subtract using integers. What are the rules for adding and subtracting integers?

Daily Math Review  This is your warm up.  Come in and get started right away  Organization of warm up.

Binder Set Up  Daily Math Review (DMR)/Warm Ups  Homework  Notes/Vocab  Class Work  Tests/Quizzes

Heaps and Holes  Have you ever been to the beach?  Have you ever played with the sand?  Have you ever dug a hole in the sand?  The sand you dig out = positive  The hole = negative

Using Number Lines  Draw 5 number lines in your notes.  Number them from -10 to +10.  What IS an integer on a number line?  What IS addition on a number line?  What IS subtraction on a number line?

Using Number Lines: Let’s try a few…  Solve using a number line. Include a verbal explanation with each.  ( -1) (-2)  (-7)

Integers as Counters  Using counters, draw and label the number 3, -4, and zero in your notes.  What IS an integer as a charge?  What IS addition with counters?  What IS subtraction with counters?

Solve and Explain  Solve using counters. Include a verbal explanation with each.  ( -1) (-2)  (-7)

Using Counters  We can also use and to represent positive and negative numbers.  For each of our positive numbers, we will use a + sign and for all of our negative numbers, we will use a – sign.  Let’s try a few… + -

Integer RULES  List the integer addition and subtraction rules you have been taught in years prior to 8th grade.  What IS a rule?  Why do you use them?  What are the relationships between the rule and the number line or counters?

Solve and Explain  Solve using the rules. Include a verbal explanation with each.  ( -1) (-2)  (-7)

Integer War  Split a deck of cards between you and your partner(s) evenly.  Round 1: Flip two cards over. Black cards are positive and Red cards are negative. Find their sum. The largest sum wins the cards. Go through the entire stack.  Round 2: Do the same, but subtract the first card and second card. You must keep the order flipped.

Homework  Complete the addition and subtraction worksheet, multiples of 3.  Record any problems you could not solve or with which you had difficulty.  Prepare a question to ask in class about these problems.  Challenge: Complete problems #
